Dr. Schmakel is a 1983 graduate of the Ohio State University's College of Dentistry. He received his Fellowship award from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) in 1990.

The AGD is an International Organization of 35,000 general dentists committed to continuing education. AGD dentists acquire AGD Fellowship status by passing a written exam and completing 500 hours of continuing education course hours within 10 years. Masters then complete 600 additional hours, 400 of which must be fulfilled through "hands-on" courses.

In addition, Dr. Schmakel has completed all 6 Continuum's at the L.D. Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida. The Institute is committed to excellence in providing progressive, continuing education for dentists worldwide. They are especially dedicated to helping dentists learn advanced restorative techniques.
